{"id":105,"date":"2013-02-13T14:25:47","date_gmt":"2013-02-13T19:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/?p=105"},"modified":"2013-02-13T14:27:26","modified_gmt":"2013-02-13T19:27:26","slug":"winter-love-since-saying-loving-winter-would-involve-prevarication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/winter-love-since-saying-loving-winter-would-involve-prevarication\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Love (since saying &#8220;Loving Winter&#8221; would involve prevarication)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s winter. \u00a0It&#8217;s February. \u00a0It&#8217;s drab and grey and flabby around here. \u00a0Not to mention cold.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d really prefer using words like soil, warmth, barefoot, green, and swimming but let&#8217;s face it. \u00a0Those words have gone dormant. \u00a0It&#8217;s the time of year when you just have to hold on and keep walking, one coffee-sloshed, fuzzy-socked step at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes a little creativity helps. \u00a0I needed a wreath for the front door to replace the Christmas one that stayed up too long and then disappeared leaving only a bare, black wreath hanger in its place for an even longer time. \u00a0Before Christmas, I noticed a darling play house in the Pottery Barn Kids magazine that included miniature wreaths on all the windows. \u00a0They looked like mini cotton balls strung in a line and then formed in a circle and I wondered, could I do something with cotton balls on a larger scale? \u00a0It turns out that gluing hundreds of cotton balls onto a wreath form is mindless handwork and, better yet, it&#8217;s quick. \u00a0Mindless and quick are strong, good words that evoke happy emotions after a long morning of homeschooling when a to do list stares at your face.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0287.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-108\" alt=\"Jan 13_0287\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0287-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0287-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0287-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0287.jpg 1660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even when it&#8217;s quick, mindless, and doesn&#8217;t require skill, creating a little bit of something always feels refreshing. \u00a0Maybe because it stays finished for a little bit, unlike the beds that get unmade, the floors that get dirty minutes after sweeping, and the dishes that hop back out onto the counters within hours. \u00a0Maybe because there is an intense longing for beauty inside all of us and creating something that adds beauty breathes life into our spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the doll house version, the grown up version didn&#8217;t look complete without a little embellishment. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t have anything on hand (I thought) and I really didn&#8217;t feel like buying anything for winter when we&#8217;re on the verge of spring. But then one day I needed to put a few odds and ends away and I thought &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Cha Ching! \u00a0So here it is. \u00a0A very simple wreath that makes our doorway feel happy. \u00a0Even if the door hasn&#8217;t seen a drop of paint in all its thirty years of life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Feb-13_0292.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-107\" alt=\"Feb 13_0292\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Feb-13_0292-682x1024.jpg\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Feb-13_0292-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Feb-13_0292-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Feb-13_0292.jpg 1107w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of cold and winter, I think I&#8217;ve finally learned how to stay warm. \u00a0I&#8217;d asked for advice <a href=\"http:\/\/smilesbymiles.xanga.com\/770906689\/december-happenings\/\">here<\/a>, and someone questioned me about my coat. \u00a0Well, the truth is, my coat has seen a lot of wear and a lot of the inside of the washer and it really wasn&#8217;t very warm. \u00a0I&#8217;d been eyeing a coat at the Columbia outlet, but when your income switches to a living allowance you think a lot more often about spending $159 on a coat. \u00a0Don&#8217;t get me wrong. \u00a0We&#8217;re doing fine and the board was very gracious in making sure our living allowance covered what we need, especially in regards to Liam&#8217;s food allergies and the way that spikes our grocery bills. \u00a0But, it does make you think twice about what you need and what you can do without. \u00a0Needs and wants just get defined a little differently. \u00a0Well, the very next morning my email dinged when I was still in bed. \u00a0I groggily stopped by the computer on my way to get a cup of coffee and nearly fell over in shock. \u00a0Someone I don&#8217;t even know had sent $160 to my paypal account and told me to go get a coat. \u00a0Seriously, this just about blew me away. \u00a0I felt so cared for by God. \u00a0Could I survive as is? \u00a0Yes. \u00a0But did He care about the fact that I was cold? \u00a0YES.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-110\" alt=\"Jan 13_0300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0300-682x1024.jpg\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0300-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0300-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0300.jpg 1107w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being cold is one of <strong>the worst things<\/strong> about winter for me. \u00a0I am always colder than everyone else. \u00a0The janitor at our church once said, &#8220;If I see Michelle shivering and Mim fanning herself, I know I&#8217;ve about got it right.&#8221; \u00a0When I get cold, I get so miserable I feel like I can&#8217;t move. \u00a0Some winters I feel as though I will never actually completely thaw all the way inside. \u00a0Well, as it turns out, God is keeping me quite warm this year. \u00a0The house we moved into has a huge wood furnace in the basement that is way too big for this tiny house. \u00a0Unless it&#8217;s 10 degrees outside, it&#8217;s probably borderline too warm in here. \u00a0More days than not, I&#8217;ve opened the main door just to get some air (side benefit: the glass door lets in more light) because it is so <strong>piping hot<\/strong> in here. \u00a0David says this is the first winter he has not once heard, &#8220;I am never going to get completely warm until spring.&#8221; \u00a0No wonder he laughs every time I say, &#8220;It is so hot in here.&#8221; \u00a0Heat rarely bothers me; but I&#8217;ll be the first to admit, a hot house in the winter feels wierd.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0062.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-109\" alt=\"Jan 13_0062\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0062-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0062-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0062-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0062.jpg 1660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0{pretend it&#8217;s dark and about twenty degrees colder with a few propane lanterns for light and you&#8217;ll get a feel for vespers}<\/p>\n<p>The first time I had my new coat with it&#8217;s advanced Omni Heat and Omni Shield Technology it was 14 degrees outside. \u00a0We started the twenty minute layering process it takes to get all four of us ready to spend an hour and a half outside at vespers. \u00a0And boy did I layer. \u00a0Leggings. \u00a0Insulated snow pants. \u00a0Sweater. \u00a0Sweatshirt. \u00a0New coat. \u00a0Thin gloves. \u00a0Thick snow gloves (also with Omni Shield). \u00a0Thick socks. \u00a0Snow Boots. \u00a0Hat. \u00a0Hood. \u00a0The end. \u00a0We left for camp with coffees and hot chocolates in hand.<\/p>\n<p>As always, David kept leaning over and whispering, &#8220;Are you cold?&#8221; \u00a0But instead of replying, &#8220;Yes, but I&#8217;ll be okay,&#8221; I was whispering, &#8220;No, but don&#8217;t fall off the bench.&#8221; \u00a0It was incredible. \u00a0Instead of shivering at 26 degrees, I was pretty much comfortable at 14. \u00a0So to {you know who you are}, thank you for being God&#8217;s wallet. \u00a0Every time I grab that coat, I think about how much God cares about the little things that sometimes don&#8217;t feel little at all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0301.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-111\" alt=\"Jan 13_0301\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0301-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0301-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0301-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.michellebeachy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Jan-13_0301.jpg 1660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s winter. \u00a0It&#8217;s February. \u00a0It&#8217;s drab and grey and flabby around here. \u00a0Not to mention cold.
